Traditionally, when people think roofing they are thinking of a built up roof (BUR) applied using hot asphalt. This is a system that has been in existence for well over a century and a half. However, like so many things in the world, just because it’s been around a while doesn’t mean it’s outdated. A BUR system, properly applied, is durable and cost effective. Our crews have years of experience with this type of system, and they know what they’re doing when it comes to reroofing with a new BUR system.

A well-installed hot-mopped roof with four reinforcing plies (4-ply) provides up to 280 mils in waterproofing protection and thickness for foot traffic. Mineral surface cap sheets can be installed with white acrylic applied directly to the surface in the factory so it can comply with the new "Title 24" requirements. The redundancy in layers gives the added insurance of a long-lasting roof, which should remain serviceable for at least 25 years. If the white reflective coating is reapplied every 10 years or so, it could last indefinitely.

"Tried and true" roofing system. Asphault BUR has been around long enough for people to know that it works. Star's crews have enough experience with this type of application to make sure it's done properly and safely.
Multiple layers provide redundency. With a four ply application, if something goes wrong with one of the layers (such as a tear or other leak), the other layers will still be there to provide a watertight roof.
When installed and maintained correctly, can last indefinitely. Assuming the roof is installed correctly in the first place, and the roof is properly maintained in the years to follow, there is no reason why another reroof would be necessary in the future
Make sure to take practical aspects into account.  Is the roof easily accessible? Will there be lots of foot traffic below? Is there anything in the building that absolutely cannot be damaged? These are all issues to discuss with your account manager when considering a BUR project because there are many factors that can make this system prohibitively expensive and/or risky particularly when other alternatives exist.

Some of the main drawbacks to hot asphalt roofing have been the odor, the noise, the interruption to business, and quite simply the number of things that can go wrong. Any roofer can tell you that even when they do everything right, accidents can happen. Nonetheless, Star Roofing is committed to the safety of its employees, which is why our accident rate is over 70% lower than the industry average. If you do decide that a BUR system is best for your project, Star Roofing is the team you’ll want to be doing it. Factors you’ll want to consider when deciding to do a re-roof with asphalt include building access, the amount of rooftop mechanical equipment, height, existing roofing layers, and weather. Truly, when properly applied, a BUR is still one of the best roofing systems in the industry.
